Message from the President
August 26, 2013
Dear LMU Students, Faculty and Staff:
Welcome back to campus. This will be a memorable and historic year for Loyola Marymount University, especially as we begin to see the educational benefits of the new Core Curriculum.
You will note some physical changes to the campus, as well. During the summer, we began construction of the Life Sciences Building. Through careful planning and some reconfiguration of roads and parking, we are minimizing the impacts of this project. The building – its laboratories, classrooms, unique workspaces and auditorium – will yield benefits to our community for decades to come.
As important, we welcome another group of freshmen. These new Lions meet the high standards of our recent classes, reflecting the strength and pull of our programs. For the fourth successive year, freshman applications topped 11,000, with entering students once again averaging above 1200 on the SAT and over 3.7 on their GPA. The diversity of the class – more than half of the incoming freshmen are students of color – continues our commitment to a diverse educational experience.
LMU also offers an intimate education, and much of our success is built on that. We have more than 500 full-time faculty and our student-to-faculty ratio is 11 to 1. The average undergraduate class has 21 students and the average graduate class has 15 students. These numbers are extraordinary and they mean every student has the opportunity for mentoring and personal interaction with faculty.
We value you as a member of our community and for your commitment to LMU. Our heartfelt thanks go to our dedicated faculty and staff who work hard daily to carry out LMU’s mission. Thank you all for your continued support.
