Message from President Snyder on the Passing of Pope Francis

Dear LMU Community,

Today, we mourn the loss of Pope Francis, whose life was a testament to compassion, humility, and courageous leadership. For over a decade, his papacy offered a profound commitment to justice, mercy, and radical inclusion—values consistent with our mission as a Catholic university in the Jesuit and Marymount traditions.

Pope Francis urged us to recognize the sacred in one another, especially in the poor, the marginalized, and our wounded Earth. As the first Pope from the Society of Jesus, he brought a deep commitment to finding God in all things, meeting others where they are, and discerning God's spirit through the full engagement of the Church. His voice was one of solidarity and tenderness—a reminder that love can change the course of history. With prophetic courage, he called the Church to re-articulate the good news of Christ in a way that is radically welcoming and deeply challenging, inviting us into a more authentic witness of the Gospel.

As we reflect on Papa Francisco’s legacy, we are called to carry forward the spirit he so beautifully embodied. In his memory, let us recommit to being people for and with others, led by hope, dialogue, and service. We are working on a gathering for our community, and we will share additional information in the coming days.

On this Easter Monday, let us remember the promise of new life in the resurrection. May Pope Francis rest in the eternal peace and perpetual light of the One he served with steadfast faith.

In community and in prayer,
 Tim
