Reaffirming Our Commitment to Dreamers

June 18, 2020

Dear LMU Community:

The U.S. Supreme Court announced its decision upholding the legality of the DACA program, giving us more uplifting news in a time of pain and unrest. I hope this is a harbinger of additional lasting and meaningful change to come.

I am proud of our community for its steadfast support of our Dreamers since the Trump Administration announced in 2017 that it would end DACA. Our LMU Latinx community has been a source of courage and empowerment. I thank the Latino/a Faculty Association, the Latino/a Staff Association, the Undocumented Student Advisory Committee, and the Loyola Immigrant Justice Clinic for their leadership and continued advocacy for our Dreamers. I am especially grateful for the activism of our student grassroots organization, Resilience at LMU, whose members inspire us all.

Today’s victory brings us a new beginning. We must remain committed to our Dreamers and continue to remind Congress of the benefits our country has experienced, thanks to them and thanks to DACA. Dreamers contribute to our communities, and they strengthen our economy in ways profound. They represent what is best about America—the country in which they have been raised and which belongs to them as much as any of us.

Though we can celebrate the SCOTUS ruling today, our fight continues until legislation is passed to provide for their permanent protection.

In solidarity and peace,

Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D.
