Timothy Law Snyder

Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D., served as the 16th president of Loyola Marymount University from June 1, 2015, to May 31, 2025, marking a transformative era in the university’s history. A dedicated educator, mathematician, and leader in Jesuit higher education, Dr. Snyder championed academic excellence, inclusion, and innovation. His presidency was defined by record achievements in enrollment, fundraising, research classification, and national rankings, as well as expanded global engagement and key infrastructure additions that include a third LMU campus in Playa Vista. Dr. Snyder leaves behind a legacy of purpose-driven leadership, creative scholarship, and a steadfast commitment to educating the whole person in the Jesuit and Marymount traditions.
His academic and research interests include computational mathematics, data structures, design and analysis of algorithms, geometric probability, digital signal processing, airline flight safety, HIV diagnosis and prevention, and the education of Millennials and Gen Z—whom he calls the “Solidarity Generation.”
Dr. Snyder earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in applied and computational mathematics from Princeton University. He also holds an M.S. in mathematics, a B.A. in psychology, and a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Toledo.
Before his presidency at LMU, he held senior academic roles at several Jesuit institutions: vice president for academic affairs at Loyola University Maryland (2007–14), dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Fairfield University (2001–07), and dean of science at Georgetown University (1995–99).
Dr. Snyder is a professor of Mathematics in LMU Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering. He is also a lifelong musician who writes, arranges, and produces his own music, available at lmu.edu/snydertunes.
